Is An Ultrasound Necessary?
A positive pregnancy test cannot tell you how far along you are or where the pregnancy is developing. If you qualify, a limited ultrasound may provide some of that information; whether the exam is appropriate depends on your circumstances.
An early ultrasound may help estimate gestational age, look for a pregnancy inside the uterus, and check for cardiac activity when detectable. These are details a pregnancy test cannot show. Learn more about pregnancy ultrasounds.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images on a screen. Before the exam, the team can explain how it will be performed and when your results will be reviewed.
After a positive pregnancy test, ask whether you qualify for a limited ultrasound. The team can explain the results and whether further medical evaluation is recommended.
