Adoption

Considering Adoption?

If you’re pregnant and unsure whether parenting is right for you, adoption may be one option to explore. You can learn how the process works, ask what choices you would have, and take time to consider how you feel about it. Learning about adoption does not commit you to making an adoption plan.

Adoption plans are often described by the amount of contact between the birth parent and adoptive family.

In an open adoption, you may communicate directly with the adoptive family and, if everyone agrees, continue some form of contact after placement. A semi-open adoption usually involves sharing updates through an agency or another intermediary. In a closed adoption, identifying information and ongoing contact are generally limited.

These terms are a starting point, not a promise of exactly how a relationship will work. An adoption professional can explain what is possible and help you discuss expectations before making any agreements.

You may want to know how families are chosen, what happens during pregnancy and after birth, or whether you can change your mind. Those are important questions, and you deserve clear answers from a qualified adoption professional.

You can also talk through what parenting, adoption, and your other options might mean for your circumstances. There is no need to settle on a decision simply because you asked about adoption. Take the time you need to understand the process and consider what matters to you.
